When you are comparing pre-owned watches, the crystal is easy to overlook. It is the transparent cover over the dial, and its material affects scratch resistance, appearance and what you should inspect before buying.
What is sapphire crystal?
Sapphire watch crystal is synthetic sapphire made from aluminium oxide. It is valued because it is highly scratch-resistant and transparent. That does not mean a sapphire crystal is impossible to damage: chips, impact damage and scratches can still occur, so the actual condition of a pre-owned watch should always be checked.
Sapphire vs mineral vs acrylic crystal
Sapphire crystal is especially resistant to everyday scratching and is widely used on modern Swiss watches and many higher-specification watches.
Mineral crystal is hardened glass. Its exact properties vary by manufacturer, so a listing should identify it only when the material is known.
Acrylic crystal is a plastic crystal commonly associated with many older watches. It can pick up surface scratches more easily, but its presence can also be correct for the design and period of a particular watch. Crystal material alone does not determine whether a watch is good or valuable.
What should you check on a pre-owned sapphire watch?
Look at photographs from several angles and check the crystal edge as well as the centre. Ask whether any visible marks are on the crystal, the coating or the dial underneath. A clear crystal does not tell you the watch's service history, water resistance or overall mechanical condition.
Also treat water-resistance ratings separately. A watch having sapphire crystal does not prove that its seals are fresh or that an older watch is currently water resistant. For a pre-owned watch, a current pressure test is the meaningful evidence if water resistance matters to you.
Examples currently available at SEKUND
Several watches in our current selection are specifically documented with sapphire crystal. The Certina DS Podium Quartz combines sapphire crystal with a Swiss quartz movement, while the Certina DS Spel Quartz is another Swiss-made example. For a different style and movement family, see the Citizen World Chronograph A-T Eco-Drive, which is listed with anti-reflective sapphire crystal.
You can also browse all currently available watches and compare each product's documented crystal, movement and condition details.
Does sapphire crystal make a watch better?
It can be a useful durability feature, particularly if resistance to everyday scratches matters to you. But when buying pre-owned, the better question is whether the whole watch suits your needs and whether its actual condition is clearly documented. Movement, case condition, bracelet or strap, dial, functionality and service information all matter alongside the crystal.
